Patti Smith (full name Patricia Lee Smith) is an American artist whose work spans music, poetry, writing, and visual art. She was part of the downtown New York arts scene in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Her performances often mix spoken word and rock music. Her lyrics and art tend to be raw, emotional, socially aware, poetic, and rooted in her personal experiences. She is often called the “Godmother of Punk” because of her influence in helping shape punk rock’s aesthetic and attitude—especially through fusing poetry and rock.
